Runaway is located in a remote area where there is very little traffic…mostly people who live in, or are staying in, the area.
Although you must use caution when walking or riding bikes on the narrow roads, most traffic is aware that pedestrians are a common sight. At Silver Beach (nearby) Kelllam Drive runs along the bay front; with cottages lining the street, this is an ideal area for a leisurely walk or ride. Kellam drive is noted for its beautiful sunsets in the book “Off Rt. 13”. Occohannock Neck road is a long winding country road which is often ridden by more experienced bicyclists.
The fishing starts early in the spring with Drum, Croaker, Cobia, and others; flounder fishing picks up as the water becomes warmer. There are also less desirable fish such as “skates” and sharks which can be fun for those who like a challenge.
There is a small public beach at Silver Beach. Chincoteague and Assateague Island are about an hour’s drive North. Kiptopeke National Wildlife Refuge has beaches along the bay and the ocean; there is also a public boat ramp.
If you enjoy history, you won’t want to miss Smith and Tangier Islands. There is a ferry which leaves Crisfield or Onancock on regularly scheduled trips; you can only get there by boat.
There are antique shops dotted all over the lower shore. Onancock is nice historic town with a variety of old stores located about 30 minutes North.
Many of our guests have mentioned that their most interesting moments had occurred while sitting on the deck at Runaway and watching nature do what nature does.
